Battery Technology

Battery technology is improving while the cost is simultaneously falling. Few people can grasp just how many new battery companies and battery chemistries are vying to take us to the next level of energy storage! Solar Plus has installed all types of batteries from the most affordable lead acid batteries to the high end lithium ion phosphate batteries.

How does your battery chemistry affect the cost and longevity of the your battery? The electric car industry has brought about the boom and economy of scale for production of lithium ion batteries. Lithium ion and lithium ion phosphate are now the norm for solar plus storage microgrid. Early solar installs almost always used flooded lead acid or sealed lead acid batteries like those found in your car. These batteries, while inexpensive, seldom lasted more than five to six years. The memory on a lead acid battery limited its use to 50% of its capacity and to stretch the battery life most off grid users would try to use only the top 20% of capacity. So although the lead acid battery is affordable, it needs to be replaced often.

Simpliphi

The Simpliphi is our favorite battery of all the new lithium chemistries! This very stable non-toxic Lithium Ferro Phosphate battery, with a ten-year or 10,000 cycle warranty, is completely scalable in parallel at the most common voltage (48Volts DC) of most residential off grid and hybrid inverters. The virtual lack of battery memory means customers can come back year after year to add more storage and/or PV as their loads increase. The Simpliphi battery offers a very high charge and discharge rate without any thermal issues. It comes standard with an exterior switch and internal charge protection. Because of the lithium chemistry, the battery features the ability to use the entire range of voltage so that all of the battery capacity is available on the load. LG Chem

LG Chem is one of the clear leader in Lithium ion for commercial applications.  With efficiency in mind there is a trend for ever higher DC voltages in solar panel series configurations and battery voltages. LG Chem is one of the first companies to introduce a 400 volt battery. The new RESU ESS series 9.8kwh lithium ion battery is modular and scalable for residential and commerical.

Solar Plus is working to redefine DC efficiency with direct coupling from high voltage solar to battery. This trend will allow commercial buildings and industrial areas to start independent  microgrids to manage internal loads and frequency control.  The isolation effect of these new microgrids will ultimately improve energy security for the overall grid.  High voltage DC batteries will  facilitate the integration of  more solar PV  for electric transportation.  Batteries will allow more PV to work with hydro and pumped storage hydro. Commercial areas will become their own mini grids with pure power for reliability, security  and long term cost control.   

As we look toward future commercial solar development in the islands, in the absence of net metering,  batteries now pencil in to all self supply PV systems.  Lithium batteries are not the exclusive domain of self supply solar PV, but are now used routinely by the utilities to adjust frequency and voltage on the line side of the meters.  Whole communities are now planned inside areas previously considered PV saturated.   These communities  will merge the use of lithium batteries in a macro scale to allow more PV to be installed  in saturated areas under strict control to limit frequency and voltage changes to the broader grid.  Solar Plus specializes in commercial self-supply automation.  Using PLC and PAC programmed zero export systems Solar PLus has achieved ground breaking phased array deployment to maximize PV use in areas with and without batteries.
